But Who's Counting???

It's soccer season again. This is the second time Braden has played. The first time, he was resistant to the idea of actually running up and down the field, and begged to be goalie at each game. This year started off with a huge surprise. Rusty came home from the parent meeting and announced he was the new Coach for the team! What? Now you may be asking, did Rusty play soccer as a kid? No. Did he play in high school? Nope. He was an 'assistant' coach of the team last year, but that's a pretty short resume. Luckily, he was super excited and up for the challenge. And I can not tell you how cute it is when they follow him up and down the field like a Mama Duck and her chicks... He's pretty much a celebrity in Braden's eyes, since all the kids want to hug coach, or give him high-5's. SO cute.

We have a huge team, of 16! They are all 4-5 years old and most of them haven't played before. Go Dolphins. We are three games into the season and the kids are actually getting a hang of it. To our surprise at the first game, Braden ran, kicked, stopped the ball like a pro. All the drills finally clicked for him! Then when he got the chance to play goalie, he blocked 5 goals! One, sneaky fast ball got through his legs, but no one else scored on him. He has even made a goal. Granted, it was in the wrong net, but who's counting? Thankfully, at this age it is actually against the rules to keep score...We are really lucky that so many of the parents help on and off the field. We have the hands-down best team Soccer Mom. She is so on top of things. I tell ya. It makes all the difference.
Our team is nearly split 50/50 boys and girls, and those girls are the best at ball control, and dribbling the ball down field. That is, when they aren't doing cart wheels (no kidding- during games!) or chatting. The boys aren't all business yet either though. Braden spend the better part of one quarter chatting across the field with some Mom of the team we were playing. (I think she was doing it on purpose!) There have been a few poor sport moments. That is the worst part about playing kid sports. But I digress...
The coaches make all the difference. Luckily, our team would rather let everyone play, equally and have fun, than score a lot. I really think I saw a future pro soccer player in the game today, that girl had skills... The funny things about this age is the ease at which they can cry. One girls got knocked to the ground and cried to come out. Then a minute later, she was crying to go back in! Braden cried for about 30 seconds after getting hit in the face (don't get me started) by another player (not our team) and was right back to the game. Some cry when they don't want to be goalie, other when they do. It is so funny.

Braden doing a corner kick!

Braden has learned to listen to all the coaches, and control his emotions when things don't go his way. He is doing corner kicks, and kicking the ball back in play after stopping a goal. I love it. He wants to try baseball, but I don't know if I can handle two sport seasons a year, we'll see...

Kicking the ball back on the field...

Way to go Dolphins. As long as at the end of the game, everyone played, kicked some dirt, kicked at the ball and got a treat, they are happy... Only a few more games till season is over, and then we will be ready for our favorite season...SWIM SEASON!

Wow! Coach Beck. It has a nice ring to it!

Hey, since when is soccer in the Spring? I thought it was always in Fall. I guess things have changed since I had brothers playing soccer!

I see treats after the game are still en vogue. Nice to know that the best part of the game (well, at least for the older sister sitting on the sideline who got a treat if there was enough) is still intact.

Sounds like they'll have a better record than our Dolphins over here. Go Rusty! I don't know a thing about soccer. Really, nothing!

that makes me miss our soccer days...just for a minute. I bet Rusty is a great coach. Dave finally made his basketball coaching debut this year and I think it was so great for he and Max to bond.

Oh how fun! Jake can't wait to coach Kash's soccor, baseball, and basketball teams! Madi played soccor one year but she was one of the one's doing cartwheel's on the field so he said no more, and on to dance it was! Braden looks so good out there! It's great!

I just realized I spelt soccer wrong. I knew something didn't look right! LOL

When Emily played "indoor" soccer, she was playing goalie when to my horror, I looked down and saw her laying in front of the goal, with her legs out straight and her body stiff, blocking the goal with her body. Clever, huh? Ha! And getting some rest while she was at it!

Lol... Peyton gave the whole soccer thing a try... I forced him to stick with it for a while but his problem is he is way to hard on himself and gets really (and I do mean REALLY) angry if he doesn't do something right the first time, lol! It wound up being more of a attack on himself than having fun playing with his buddies. I really need to find him a sport he can LOVE! Any suggestions?

You are such a cute proud mama. Way to go Rusty for being brave enough to coach. I think kids soccer is the funnies and I can't wait until Emery is old enough.

I'm missing everything!!! I want to be down there so badly and watch Braden rock at soccer! I can't believe he got stung by a scorpion, that's like my worst nightmare. He's so brave. Tell the boys I love them! I love you and Rusty too of course! Mwah!!!

Spencer will be so jealous. He's played soccer his whole life (still does) and has always wanted to coach, but hasn't been able to find a coaching position that isn't already filled. Forrest should be able to start next year (this year if we can talk the people in charge into it) and perhaps that will give Spencer the "in" that he needs. I love soccer (not playing, mind you, I'm no good, but watching) and I'm excited for my kids to get started in it. Keep up the good work Braden and good luck coaching Rusty!

Love soccer and the cute kids when they play! We'll have to hook up for Fall sports and you can show me the ropes of AZ sports. Braden is a little stud. Glad Rusty gets to show the kids some skillz ;)

Cute! I love watching little kids play soccer, it's adorable. Go Rusty, coach it up. We are getting excited for swim lessons too, hopefully Cade won't cry hysterically the entire time this year.

Rusty really is Superdad! Can he be the coach for my kids, too?

just curious....why are the Dolphins wearing RED????

Glad you guys are enjoying the soccor mom/dad thing!!

Caryn said...

Thanks for pointing that out Rob!

We have to choose the Team name the first week of practice and we don't choose our uniforms... so, we have red Dolphins.

BTW Braden hates the team name, and it was his idea...

Fun! I think Tyler will enjoy stuff like that someday... seeing how much he loves sports, and loves his kids, it's a win win situation!
