We got to BCH at Noon and got checked in. By 12:30 we were in our PreOp room. Braden did so good with me until it came time to change into the gown and socks. Pretty sure I was going to have a black eye today, but thankfully I don't. Let's just say I am forever grateful to a ChildLife worker "Miss Jessica" for distracting the smack down I got by offering to bring in a Wii if he changed. So we waited and waited. And of course the one thing they tell you to bring is a 'friend' from home, but do I remember? No. Daddy to the rescue. He stopped and got B a new Webkinz. Which I have to give him props for- B has accumulated over 20 of those dang things and Rusty picked one he doesn't already have. I was QUITE impressed!
Well by 1:30 we decided to give Braden something to calm his nerves. But we had to wait for the Anesthesiologist to come and give the order. By 2 we were told they were behind and it would be 3:30 before they started his case. Finally about 4 his OR nurse came in and did the final prep.
He was such a trooper. He was getting really hungry and the wait was annoying. We played Go Fish, War, did puzzles, I SPy, played Connect 4. Plus the Wii, and his DS and the I Phone came in handy. They told us once they gave him the Versed that he would probably fall asleep, so when the Doc came back into to check on him he laughed that we were sitting up playing cards. His exact words were "He's no cheap date, huh?" Pretty funny.
When it was time to go back he cried for his Daddy which made it easier on me. The Anesthesiologist ended up carrying him down the hall. Less than an hour later the surgeon came to talk to us. It had gone well. The stitches are internal and will dissolve in a few months. They also removed a mole on his leg that looked suspicious to them.
We were in the PACU (post anesthesia care unit) for over an hour while he woke up and tried to get some fluids down. Last night was rough, he was in a lot of pain. This morning too. He is finally able to walk on his own-they gave him an epidural so he couldn't feel his feet for 8 hours post op! Now the fun begins- I have to think of ways to keep this kid from running, riding bikes or scooters ect for THREE WEEKS! EEK! I have invested in some new Lego's, board games and I pray he cooperates! Thanks for all the love and support!

I'm so glad that it went well and is now in the past! I don't envy you the next three weeks. Good luck!
Your little boy was in my thoughts and prayers all day yesterday. I am glad he is ok. You are an inspiration of strength to me even though I do not know you.
You aren't kidding, he really isn't a cheap date. That sounds like a lot of electronics and gaming to entertain - poor kid having to starve all day. Glad all is well. You have had to endure way too much hospital time with that kid.
I'm glad everything went well. Good luck with the next 3 weeks! :)
I'm glad things went well! Kids are amazing at how they can bounce back. If it was me, I probably wouldn't want to do anything for 3 weeks, but for a kid, you can't keep 'em down!
What a brave little guy! I'm so glad everything went well.
I am so glad the surgery is over with, and things went smoothly (well, you know, except for the delays and the "smack down"). I'm sure you feel so relieved!
I'm glad it went well Caryn - give him a hug for me! I'll be in town March 9-15th. We'll have to get together, i'm watching all 4 kids. I might need some play dates.
I'm glad it went well. I can't believe he had to fast until 4! Poor guy, I can't even last that long!
oh poor boy :( im so glad everything went well!! i hope the next three weeks go well too :)
I am so glad all went (relatively) well and you don't have a black eye to show for your trouble! It is a good thing you have some ideas on how to keep the little guy occupied for three weeks. I am afraid that may be the real challenge. I know you are up for it!;)
I'm so glad everything went well. Both my little guys had umbilcal hernias too. Jessica at Desert is great, I used to work with her, she was a life saver for all of us.
I haven't been on your blog forever! Poor little guy! I'm glad he did so well though! Congrats on baby number three! I heard you were expecting just the other day! That's great news!
Oh, what a brave little family. I'm so glad it went well.
Braden is one awesome kid! I am sooo grateful that it all went well. Nice work Rusty, I was impressed too with the webkin. And you are sooo right, good luck keeping him from anything physical. Maybe rent/go to movies more? Call me if you need anything:) xoxo
Hi,
I came across your blog while Googling information on my son's condition. He has Taussig-Bing, or DORV, TGA, coarc of the aorta and a VSD--almost sinilar to your son's. Anyways, I have found great comfort in following your son's journey and how full of a life he has had thus far. My son's CB site is: http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/babycarsten
if you want to take a look. Carsten also recently had to have a hernia repair as a result of his surgery, it was definitely nice to take him home the same day!
Best Regards,
Vanessa
