Why will my boys smile and look right at me when I am about to shout one of their names. Or, why do they decided the best day to play in the sandbox is the very same day I clean the floors. Or, my favorite, how do they know that the only way to take away the great sense of accomplishment I have from finally finishing all the laundry in one day, is to puke/pee all over their bed so I have another load to do?!!
Sometimes I swear Murphy's Law is running my life!
It's like the day I finally cave and get the car washed, is the day Braden spills his Frosty and Berkley smashes up his fishy crackers. So, I shouldn't have been surprised that when I finally took Berkley to an actual portrait studio, he would be the complete opposite of Camera Ready. Agh, I really didn't want to do the whole 2nd child thing, and never get his pictures taken, especially since I had Braden's done professionally every 6 months, easy. So finally, at 18 months, I make the appointment, get the in a good nap, have a cute new shirt, and have the boys in good moods and we head off to Target. From the get go, Berk didn't want to stand on the backdrop. And once he spotted a prop ball, he was done. And what is with the 'photographer' not helping me at ALL??? Any ideas for trying to get him to sit, look at the camera, new poses, ect...came from ME! I pulled out the little chair, I had Braden come and show Berk what to do. Honestly, I realize it was just Target, but you still pay for the sitting! She shot and shot, at a moving Berk, and finally announced that he was done. She said, "You can always come back if you don't get a photo you like." Um, was she serious? Did she not realize how hard it is to get a toddler, clean and happy to a photo shoot?
Agh. Luckily Rusty was able to leave work early to come wrangle the kids while I waited to see the proofs. Funnily enough, the best photos of the bunch, were a test shot of me holding Berk, and some cute ones of Braden. So, we will see. I ordered a few prints, just to placate my need to document his milestone. But I think in the future, I will steal Rusty's dad's Nikon camera and take them myself...

I have decided that some of the best pictures are those ones that you have all the trouble with. It just shows their personality too. Can't wait to see them!!
I hate picture days. It is full of threats and tears. So we stopped doing professional ones and just carry our camera around and hope for a Kodak moment! BTW sorry about the laundry. Go you for finishing it all in one day... even if you had to throw in an extra load!
Oh pictures are a nightmare. Emery is not much for getting her picture taken. Last time we went the photographer was really great and sat and played with Em til she was comfortable but then she gave the biggest guilt trip if I didn't buy a billion photos. I still have photos that I don't know what to do with from that session. Good luck with the photo shoot next week!
We need to get an updated family picture! (My baby is 6 months old - and not in our family picture!) But I do not look forward to trying to get all five kids even looking in the right direction at once, let alone smiling! Photo shoots can be so stressful! I've gotten to where I schedule the kid's pictures on Ben's day off and let him take them - because I worry about it too much! And years later they all look cute anyway, right?
Funny story! Berkley must be a typical kid. It is a good thing we can look back years, sometimes even months, later and laugh at the hectic days!
Ok, can I say that your story makes me feel a little bit better about not having Yazee's pics done?! Sorry it didn't go so well. I think I'm gonna try to get Uncle Kent to take some if I go to Utah. If not, well, I guess you get to come with me to make her pose! (I do think that the taking Russ's camera thing is a brilliant idea!) I like the naturalness of it. I love the pics I take of Yazee! Sometimes I think photography must be in the genes! HeeHee!
I wish I was better at getting pictures of my girls. We're really bad about getting family pictures done, and situations like the one you described just don't appeal to me, so I end up avoiding it altogether. Accolades to you for being brave enough to tackle it. I think you'll appreciate them despite the difficulty you had in acquiring them!
the 2 words "picture day" say it all. just an all around bad day where nothing works out as planned. and that's all before pictures even take place. and i also get upset when i do laundry all day, and find there is already dirty clothes in the basket a few hours after. grrrr..
This post cracked me up! So true!
OK, I just saw your comment about neighbors on Kelly's blog and I am totally curious now! What happened?
I can totally relate! I have learned that the very second I get my mopping done someone DUMPS chocolate milk all over the floor, or the dog pukes, or cereal gets spilled... it is just never ending. I pretty much only do my cleaning when the kids are in bed and I can enjoy it for a few hours alone! lol! As far as pics go I have been terrible about getting my kids pictures done. I need to be much better! Your not alone!
Murphy's law rules our house too. Picture day is always drama. I swear the workers there rarely have kids of their own otherwise they would understand that time is precious and our happy window is short.
The pictures turned out so cute! I love them.
Sunday after church we were rounded up (seriously, that's what it felt like) to get a family picture taken for the ward directory. Mitch was not happy about it at all, and I really didn't want to force him to look up, because all we'd get from that is an even more embarrassed and upset Mitch who's crying in the picture. But would the EQ President (who was taking the pictures) let up? Nope. "Can you just move his head a little higher?" "Can you try to get him to look up?" "Can you get him to smile?" NO, I can't, ok? Just take the picture with him curling up against my shoulder and it will be FINE! I promise! There is NO need to take a thousand million shots that you don't like just because every single face isn't angelic and looking straight at you, Mr. Cameraman. Besides, getting a picture of him curled up against his momma is heartwarming; looking at the picture, you can't always tell he's mad. You can think he's just being precious! Seriously, the dude took about 10 pictures before he said, "Do you think he'll be better if we wait a while?" Geez louise.
All that being said, the pics you posted were awesome. Love the one with Berkley patting Braden's head.
I know!! The last time we actually went to someone besides family, Dani screamed and cryed the whole time....She was 2! It's been almost 3 years since we've been to good old Target studios. So true and so funny!
Oh I think the pics turned out cute! IT really shows their little personalities!!
ok, so I looked at all of them. I think you got some really good ones. So what if they aren't prefect?! He's smiling and they are doing some adorable things in them. Love the glove one!
Those turned out so cute! I LOVE the last one! I can NEVER get my kids to look at the camera! You just gotta realize with kids, pictures are AN ADVENTURE!
Well despite the experience, he is still a cutie!
amen caryn. props to you for the effort and you did end up with some cute ones!
I think the pictures are so cute! Can't wait to see more of the Beck grandkids!
Cute kiddos. so, I guess we are no longer moving, the stupid people completely lied about everything so we backed out. How are you doing these days? I am so excited for June's Bunco!!
