Introducing B4...

Well, if you just want to see pictures of our cute new man scroll down a bit.  There are a lot of pictures, and a lot of info that you may not care about...

But since this is my blog and my memory is shot I figured I needed to write down his birth story so I wouldn't forget.  After we made it through Braden's birthday I knew any time was baby time.  Wednesday the 5th I had a doctors appointment. I was at a 4 and so she stripped my membranes. (This had worked before with the other kids so I figured I would have baby that evening) I came home and in the car I was already feeling cramping. I went about my day, took a nap, waited for kids to get home and by dinner time there still wasn't much happening, just a few contractions an hour. By bedtime they were every ten minutes so I tried to rest. But I was also trying to time the contractions so I wasn't very successful at sleep. By 11pm they were every 6 minutes and getting pretty strong. By 1 am on the 6th I was hurting with each one but they still weren't closer than 6-7 minutes. I knew being Group B Strep positive I needed antibiotics before the baby was born, so I woke up Rusty and we headed in.

We got checked in and set up in triage only to find out they were pretty busy for the middle of the night. So, after finding out I was at a 5, I got my IV, got the penicillin started for the GBS and by 3am I had my epidural.  I am happy to say that unlike my other times this epidural worked well, and evenly. Around 3:30 I was moved to a labor room and basically I rested till 6 when they would be able to start the second bag of penicillin. Sometime in the night my water broke. My nurse in the night was Amanda Jo who helped me deliver Brenner so that was fun.

I woke up very happy to see another familiar face of my dear friend Ann, a labor nurse who had come in early to take care of me after hearing I was there. So sweet. I got checked again and I was still a 5. The epidural had slowed the contractions way down, and they hadn't minded because they like you to get as much of the med before delivery as possible.  They started pitocin and my doc came by to see me and to see if she could get things started. She broke my bag, again, I had a ton of fluid. A ton.  We played the waiting game until noon when I was finally complete and ready to push.

About an hour into pushing, yes, and hour, the nurse realized that his head was facing sideways now- it had been looking down. So the doctor came in and did a little maneuvering (so glad I get epidurals by the way) and got his facing the right way again.  I had a weird itching spell about this time, so they game me a medication to help it, and it did, but it made me so tired! I was having the hardest time keeping my eyes open to push. Add that with being up since 7 am the day before and man, was I tired.  Things finally got serious about 2 hours into pushing. They brought in a few 'friends' to help out in case his shoulders were too broad for me. They were gonna "help" me push- I did not like the sound of that! Finally, after over 2 and 1/2 hours of pushing HE WAS HERE!

Proud Pops and Boston
Aunt Jill meeting nephew #4
Proud (and very puffy and tired) parents
Me and Ann, seriously the best nurse ever. I would not have made it through labor, and everything after with out her! Love ya Annie!
Love him! Our new little family!
He was the quietest baby when he was born.  Wide eyed but quiet. Once we were all cleaned up Pops (Rusty's Dad) and Jill came in and got a quick peek at the baby. I guess when your office is within walking distance of the maternity ward, you get the express pass! About the time they left the rest of the family came in to meet him. The boys were so cute. Brenner got the biggest smile on his face. He loved his baby Boston from the start. The bigger boys couldn't wait to hold him.
Brenner wanted "Baby Bossson come in our car!"

Nana & Grandpa Rasmussen
Love the look on Brenner's face, and sure glad we had Berk was his hands BEFORE he came in the room.
Rusty so excited he was finally here!
Brenner is a big brother!

Look at those sumo cheeks, I mean COME ON- how cute is he???

Shortly after everyone got their turns holding him I started feeling bad. I looked down and noticed a bulge in my belly. It seriously looked like a pop can was standing up in my stomach. So I called my nurse, and as soon as she came in she said she needed to see what was going on.  Everyone quickly left and we realized fast that I was hemorrhaging.  She called for more nurses and I started passing fist sized (and much larger) clots. I was in a lot of pain from them pushing on my stomach to help the uterus contract down, and so I got some Demerol in my IV. I was still passing clots, so they recalled my doctor to the hospital. I got a medicine in my leg to help the clotting (I think-I'm a little fuzzy, I'm sure you forgive me) and another little (read enormous!) needle with a medicine injected through my belly into my uterus to help it contract.

I was feeling a little nervous, just because of the number of nurses in the room, and then I started feeling hot and sick. I was having a reaction to one of the meds. I started sweating and puking. The nurses were fanning me and my sweet doc was putting cold rags on my neck and back. Finally things settled down, and it was just Ann, my doctor Lori, Rusty and Boston. I finally felt better enough to sit up and get some ice. They decided I needed to be in bed till the morning because of the volume of blood loss. I was still in a ton of pain, so they decided to give me Morphine in my (turned off but still placed) epidural, and Dilaudid in my IV. Because of that I had to get another catheter placed and my pulse ox meter and blood pressure cuff stayed on all night.  About 8pm I was deemed stable enough to be moved  from my delivery room to the post partum unit.
Happy to be able to hold Boston again, hours later. And glad to have some color back in my face- guess my lips were white for a while.
Boston all bundled up and resting.
And Mommy all bundled in warm blankets.

During the afternoon Boston was bathed and examined. His blood work showed he had low blood sugar. I guess big babies are pretty common to have this. So he was having to have his poor heel pricked a ton. They started giving him formula and we watched his levels going up and down.
We let Braden come back to the hospital that evening to see Boston and so he would know we were both okay. Sorry to everyone who called and came by, or tried to or wanted to, I just was not up for visitors!
About 1am they decided he needed and IV of dextrose to get his sugar up. They were deciding wether he needed to be admitted or not, so after the longest nearly two days I had a breakdown in the night. I felt so bad that I physically could not be in the nursery with him. I guess it brought back a lot of Braden memories.  In the night the pediatrician on call decided he was low, but above the cut off so they stopped monitoring his sugar so close. The next morning was a happy change. I was able to get my epidural, iv, and catheter out. Boston's IV was taken out too.

Whew, well I have a ton of pictures of visitors that came to see us, but I think that this has been a long enough post so we'll break it into two!

Art has always had wonderful things to say about you Caryn, and I do remember you from high school, soo I hope you don't mind me posting...What a story and I am soooo glad you were ok, Congratulations, he is adorable! How scary for you, I am soo grateful for modern medicine and for the blessed epidural, it is always scary hearing stories like this, but a sweet reminder of how precious life truly is, I am due with our 3rd in April, and have pneumonia currently, We are trying to stay out of the hospital, but my lungs and constant fever is well not looking good...I can't help but worrying about the little one inside...I pray your recovery is a smooth one and that you enjoy every minute with your new little angel! I do not know if you remember me but I always thought you were soo sweet and kind! Anyways Congrats again and good luck!

What a beautiful baby! And what a delivery.... sheesh! I am so glad you are okay. I am sure it will take weeks to get your energy back. Take it easy, and enjoy that sweet baby boy!

I was horrified when I read 2 1/2 hours of pushing (mine are like 10 minutes), but then I read on and realized that was just the beginning- what yucky stuff you had to go through! I hemmorrhaged (sp) after my first baby, when he was three weeks old, and had to go to the ER twice with it, and the 2nd time they did a D and C and that stopped it. I'll never forget that horrible feeling when I passed a clot, followed by hemmorrhaging. I can't even imagine with several clots, and tons of bleeding. I'm so sorry! I'm glad he's safely here and that you are doing better now.
